I’m going to go ahead with something ridiculously cliche here and just say HOLY CRAP CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY AUGUST.

I feel like I’m stuck in that tired Green Day song, “wake me upppp, when September ends”, except July is what ended and nobody woke me up so I feel disoriented like Austin Powers when he awoke from being frozen. Now that I’m saying this aloud, I’m getting a little antsy because I feel like I didn’t really “enjoy” my Summer. I guess when you’re an adult, you don’t really have a “Summer” as it relates to academic schedules. Thus, it kinda feels like you’re just plowing through every month and when Fall or Winter hits, you’re like STOP. WAIT. SHIT.

However, friends, I have found a way to enjoy the Summer that doesn’t require me to drive an hour to the beach or jump in my freezing pool (although I’d gladly do both of these things).

Remember picnics? Those fun activities we occasionally were lucky enough to engage in as children. Our moms, or dads, or both, would pack up a little basket full of snacks, throw a blanket in the car, and take us to a nearby park where we’d unfold the blanket onto the green grass and eat our scrumptious snacks under the glowing sun.

Frankly, I don’t really remember what my mom would bring with us to eat on our picnics. I just know it wasn’t puppy chow because I sure as hell would have remembered that.

Anyone reading that has small children (hell, older ‘children’, too), this Almond Butter Puppy Chow will, I’m positive, make your child’s day. Maybe you’re running out of activities and struggling to keep them busy this Summer… all you have to do to 1) be their favorite parent and 2) make their entire Summer, is make this puppy chow, pack it in a giant Ziploc, and bring them to a nearby park for them to eat it. That’s technically a picnic, and I guarantee it’s worth the chocolate that will end up all over their faces.

I am 93% positive that when I was a child, something as simple as this would have been the best day of my life. Especially because my mom made the best puppy chow when I was younger. However, I’m going to have to say that this version topped hers (sorry Mom, I know you’re reading this). Her version was the traditional chocolate + powdered sugar mixture that we all know and love. But, it truly is crazy what adding one ingredient to a traditional recipe can do.

Mixing in Barney Butter’s smooth almond butter with the melted chocolate (you don’t even have to melt the almond butter) completely changed the flavor profile and thus, made for a mind blowing picnic snack. You’ve got the sweet and bold chocolate mixed with nutty, savory almond butter tossed with crunchy rice chex cereal folded with light, fine powdered sugar. Toss it together and you’ve got a snack sent from the chocolate heavens. (Which I just made up and is now a thing).

If you’re new to the almond butter world (I find that peanut butter is the gateway nut butter, then comes almond), Barney Butter is my favorite brand of almond butter. Their smooth almond butter really resembles the texture of peanut butter, but it’s…almond butter. So, if you’re allergic to peanuts, have no fear, as their almond butter is made in a 100% peanut-free facility. Also, fun fact – Barney Butter jars are made of 100% post consumer recycled #1 PET plastic, which is BPA-free. Cool beans, right?

Another fun fact: Barney Butter is giving away $500 to AMAZON! I don’t know about you, but I could do a lot of damage with that kind of Amazon moolah. Click here and learn more about how YOU can win!

Come to think of it, I haven’t been to a picnic in forever and that’s something that needs to change ASAP! I love bringing fresh cut up fruit to a picnic but I think that you can’t go wrong with chocolate anything like puppy chow! This looks so addicting!

Neither have I!! My mom took us a few times when we were younger and she had stopped working for a bit so she would think of things to do with us during the day. So cute, I wanna take my kids one day and bring some puppy chow!! 😀

Woah, that creamy almond butter is so dreamy, and mixing it with chocolate would make the most epic puppy chow ever. I love PUPPY chow.

Soooo like I need a big bowl of this… right now please! I used to love puppy chow but I haven’t had it in years! It’s true that I really don’t have much of a “summer” anymore as I’ve worked every summer through college, but my favorite part is definitely taking time off to travel. I’m headed to Hawaii in just three weeks and I could not be more excited!

LOL that just made my day. Is this a sign that I eat too much dessert?! lolol. Florida is basically walkable all year round so I don’t really have an excuse to be a hermit, though I definitely still do that in the winter haha

I’ve never tried almond butter before, but this looks amazing! I’ll have to give it a try soon, I love puppy chow – especially how easy it is to throw together! :)
